Overview

This 11-day safari is guaranteed to provide you with an excellent combination of bush and beach experiences from exhilarating wildlife viewing, tracking the elusive rhino on foot to finally unwinding on the beautiful shores of Lake Malawi. Still relatively untouched and uncrowded, Malawi is a destination that will provide a unique and exclusive holiday to visitors seeking adventure and seclusion.

Combining three incredible locations namely Majete Wildlife Reserve, Liwonde National Park and Lake Malawi, you will have loads of time to explore Malawi, fondly know as “The warm heart of Africa”. Each day you can decide how you would like your day to unfold with activities including game drives, boat cruises, guided game walks, cultural tours, snorkelling, diving, birding, fishing and sunset cruises on offer.

The picturesque Majete Wildlife Reserve in the south of Malawi is a big 5 reserve which boasts species like black rhino, buffalo, sable and zebra. Your guides will uncover the riverine forests, granite hilltops and miombo woodlands for game and birds, ensuring you the best sightings and photographic opportunities. There is 7000 hectares of private concession bush to explore with a boat safari along the Shire River in search of buffalo, hippo and crocodile a must activity.

Liwonde National Park, well known for it’s excellent birding and generous elephant populations, is a beautiful reserve of floodplains, meandering rivers and giant baobabs. Game viewing is rewarding with the chance of ticking Pel’s Fishing Owl, Lillian’s Lovebird, sable antelope and black rhino off your list.

The beach component of your holiday will be spent on the idyllic shores of Lake Malawi. The third largest lake in Africa, its crystal water of hundreds of colourful cichlid fish, is one of the world’s most diverse lakes and is just waiting to be explored. Snorkelling and diving is an excellent way for you to discover the underwater world of this impressive lake. David Livingstone nicknamed it “The Lake of Stars” due to fishermen’s lanterns flickering on the water at night and resembling the stars. This magical lake and the friendly locals that live near it will leave you rejuvenated and relaxed.

Itinerary

Today is the start of your African safari to Malawi, the “Warm Heart of Africa”. Once you have landed in Blantyre, your representative will meet you at the airport. Your road transfer to Majete Wildlife Reserve will take approximately 2.5 hours as you pass through local villages and bush.

On arrival at the sublime Mkulumadzi Lodge, you will walk across a suspended bridge over the Mkulumadzi River to reach the spectacular lodge with its sparkling pool, viewing deck, relaxing lounge and bar. Your luxury chalet, nestled on the banks of the Shire River and shaded by giant leadwood trees, comes with all the creature comforts to make you feel right at home for the next three days. Each chalet boasts spacious rooms, private wooden verandas and outdoor rain showers.

Depending on your arrival time on day one, you will enjoy a delicious lunch overlooking the Shire River or an afternoon high tea before your afternoon and night game drive. Morning and afternoon game activities will be broken by delicious breakfasts, lazy lunches and dinners around the campfire or under the stars. Another favourite activity is to sit in the hide overlooking the waterhole in anticipation of game coming down to drink, providing excellent photography opportunities. A guided village tour is also a great way to interact with the local people and learn about their culture and way of life.

Overnight: Mkulumadzi
After breakfast, you will take a road transfer (+/- 4 hours) to Liwonde National Park. Called the place of the “hippo”, in the local Tonga language, Liwonde is a haven for wildlife and large numbers of hippo. You will quickly find yourself on one of the game activities in search of bathing elephants, basking crocodiles or one of the bird specials like Böhm's bee-eater. Each day you can choose what morning and afternoon activities you would like on your itinerary.

Boat safaris up the Shire River and around the lagoons are a great way to get up close to wildlife and also for taking photographs. Tracking the endangered black rhino (with permission) on a 2-3 hour drive and walk is a must and a great way to learn how they are monitored and conserved. Traditional day and night game drives in open 4x4 vehicles are one of the best ways to view dangerous game, drive to scenic spots for sundowners and manoeuvre around to the best game sightings.

For the next three nights you will stay in one of the luxury elevated tents that overlook the active lagoon. The comfortable tents are secluded, each with their their own private viewing deck and en-suite bathrooms. The main lodge with its comfortable lounge area, viewing deck, bar and swimming pool compliment the lodge facilities.

Overnight: Mvuu Lodge

It will take approximately 2.5 hours as you wind your way past Lake Malombe, local villages and the many fish drying racks dotted along the way. Your destination is Pumulani Lodge on the westside of Nankumba Peninsula, on the southern end of Lake Malawi. This little slice of heaven will be your home for the next four days and provides a fanstastic base from which to explore the surrounding area.

Pumulani which means “rest well” in the local Chichewa language is the epitome of relaxation with a chance for you to unwind but also to opt for one of the many actiivities on offer. The lodge, with its ten luxury villas, is nestled against the lush hillside, with elevated views of the lake. Each villa has been uniquely designed and boast a spacious bedroom and lounge, private deck, double shower and bathtub. A meandering walkway interconnects the villas with the main lodge area and the private beach right down below. The lodge prides itself in providing excellent service, delicious and freshly prepared meals using local ingredients and memorable experiences.

You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing how to relax. You could soak up the sun next to the exquisite elevated infiinity pool overlooking the lake, sip cocktails on the beach with a good book or take a gentle sunset cruise on a 40ft traditional dhow across the water. For the more active, head out for an early morning hike or bike up into the hills followed by a kayak on the lake. The two speedboats provide endless fun with waterskiing, wake boarding and tube rides. If you prefer to go sailing, the two dhingys are available for use. A great day morning or afternoon excursion is to head out with a boat and jump off into the clear waters and dive or snorkel for colourful cichlid fish.
