Overview

Camp under African skies, tell stories around a crackling campfire and feel one with nature as you embark on this mobile tented safari in the heart of Botswana’s wild bush. The safari willl take you to two prime hotspots for wildlife viewing, namely the Moremi Game Reserve, which forms part of the world-renowned Okavango Delta, and Khwai. The focus of the safari is to provide an authentic wildlife experience, like in days of old, where camp is set up every few days in a private area, allowing you time to explore the surrounding environment. Your expert guide will be on hand to find animals and birds as well as intepret the bush, teaching you incredible facts about nature and its interactions. Daily game drives with flexible times will allow you to maximise your time at animals sightings and tracking and finding game.

The Moremi Game Reserve will dish out the Big 5 with mopane woodlands hiding black rhinoceros, riverine forests home to timid leopard and inland lagoons a playground for elephant. Rare and unique species like the elusive sitatunga and the African Wild Dog are a treat to see as are lion hunting Cape Buffalo, not an uncommon sighting in this reserve. The diverse landscape of the Moremi is a magnet for a huge variety of birds and animals, making game viewing exciting and different each day.

The Khwai Concession, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, takes on a slightly different angle, with the addition of night game drives. Seventy percent of the animals are nocturnal affording guests a unique opportunity to see creatures of the dark like African Civet, aardvark, owls and leopard. Since there are no fences between the Moremi Game Reserve and Khwai, game roams freely. In addition, the Khwai River attracts a high concentration of game.

Rustic yet comfortable accommodation is set up by an experienced crew consisting of a walk-in Meru-style tent, with ensuite bathroom comprising a hot bucket shower and bush loo. Beds with linen, bathroom amenities and a fresh towel will also be provided. A dedicated cook will prepare mouthwatering meals, of African inspired dishes, each day over a campfire. There will be very little for you to do back at camp giving you time to catch up on sleep, relax and unwind.

Itinerary

Welcome to the start of your African safari in Botswana. Departing from Maun, you will make your way to the first private campsite set within the famous Moremi Game Reserve - spending two nights in the Xakanaxa / Third Bridge area. You will do a game drive en route, giving you your first chance to spot some game and get accustomed to the bush. Your guide and camp crew will make you feel right at home as you are welcomed with a drink and briefed on what you can look forward to on safari. You will also have a chance to unpack and charge any batteries for your camera. As the sun dips below the horizon, turning the sky a fiery red and the calls of the wild start to tinge the air, you will start to get a sense of the magic that you will experience being out in the wild. A glowing campfire and dinner under the stars will be served before you turn in for the evening.

The next morning you will wake early, the best time to see animals, as it is still cool. You will do game drives during the day which will be broken by delicious breakfasts and lazy lunches. The Moremi Game Reserve protects around a third of the entire Okavango Delta ecosystem – some 5 000km2 (1 930 square miles). It goes without saying, that you have plenty of area to scout for game, take stunning landscape photographs and spend time watching animal and bird behaviour in.

Overnight: Xakanaxa /3rd Bridge
Following an early morning breakfast, the camp is packed up and you continue your journey to Khwai, enjoying a picnic lunch under a shady tree on the way. You will meander through mopane woodlands and open grasslands before reaching your next camp in the Khwai Community Area. The cool Khwai River forms the boundary between the reserve and the concession, where you will spend the next three nights. The area is teeming with diurnal (day) and nocturnal (night) animals, which move freely between the areas, due to the lack of fences.

The next two days will give you ample time to explore the water-lily studded floodplains, sweeping grasslands and riparian forests that make this area so scenic. In addition to day and night game drives, you will also experience a 2½-hour mokoro trip, in a traditional dug out canoe, as you are poled through a network of channels and lagoons at a relaxed pace. Night drives will offer you a rare opportunity to see creatures of the night come out to feed and hunt.

Each day will end with unforgettable sunsets and home-cooked meals around a glowing campfire as you recount the day’s events and sightings. The call of the nearby owl will remind you that you are truly close to nature.

Overnight: Khwai Community Area
After breakfast, your guide will drive you back slowly to Maun, with a pleasant picnic lunch en-route. This will be your last chance to catch a few more snapshots of Botswana’s ‘wild and furry’ before your flight home or onward arrangements.
