Overview

This African safari will take you to two of Zambia’s premier national parks: South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi. The remote wilderness of South Luangwa combined with the water experience of the Lower Zambezi, will ensure a healthy dose of both adventure and wildlife. You will stay at exclusive luxury lodges that have been chosen for their personalised service, authentic safari experiences and prime wildlife locations, with high concentrations of game. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities, hosted by professional guides that know the area intimately and are able to unearth interesting facts about nature, animal behaviour and culture.

The Luangwa Valley is vast, remote and a honey-pot of wildlife. It’s mix of lagoons, river thickets, grassland, ebony groves and woodlands support a huge variety of game, making game sightings that much more enjoyable. Some of the species to look out for include the endemic Thornicroft's Giraffe, herds of Cape Buffalo and elephant, not to mention predators like lion and leopard.

The meandering Zambezi River, in the Lower Zambezi National Park, is the focus of activities for the second half of your trip. The river, which flows all year round, is a draw card for game and birds, making game activities a delight for photographers and guests. With the magnificent Zambezi Escarpment providing the backdrop and the Mana Pools National Park across the river, there is bush as far as the eye can see.

Itinerary

Once you arrive in Lusaka, take a scheduled flight to Mfuwe for your road transfer to Nkwali Camp, which will take about an hour, past colourful villages. A huge ebony tree, around which the bar is situated, forms the focal point of the camp. Set on the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking the unfenced national park, the secluded camp is a hive of bird and wildlife activity. Elephant, hippo and zebra are commonly seen grazing near the lodge, with many of the 400 species of bird recorded in the valley, making an appearance in camp.

To ensure a true wilderness experience, where you are one with nature, the chalets are all fully open during the day, yet still private, with incredible views over the Luangwa River. During the night, the Constantia grill doors are pulled together to close the open room fronts. Each chalet is spacious with high thatch roofs and open-air en suite bathrooms, with a view of the African night skies as you shower.

Each day you will wake up to the sounds of the bush and have the difficult choice of how to spend your day in this stunning place. The best way to search for game is on one of the day or night game drives in open 4x4 vehicles. Game drives into the park or on the private land around the camp offer excellent sightings of wild dog, lion and buffalo. Game walks are a great way to stretch the legs and approach game on foot for a different perspective. Your guides will teach about animal tracks and signs, bush craft and animal behaviour. One can also explore the lagoons and channels for hippo and crocodile by boat during the Emerald season. There will also be opportunity to visit the local school children and wildlife education centre for an on-the-ground interaction with the locals.

After breakfast fly to the Lower Zambezi National Park, via Lusaka (about 4 hours in total). The charter flight will give you an incredible bird’s eye view of the escarpment and the valley floor, with the sparkling Zambezi River and Mana Pools National Park beyond. On arrival you will take your first short game drive to the classic Chongwe River Camp. Nestled at the confluence of the Zambezi River and the Chongwe River, which forms the border of the Lower Zambezi National Park, the camp has one of the best spots in the region. The safari tents are all dotted along the Chongwe River with the main dining and lounge in the prime position at the confluence. It’s a treat to wake up in the morning with a view of elephants and hippo crossing the river. Elephants often come into camp to eat the juicy pods off the many Albida thorns that form a canopy over the camp.

Each day you dictate the pace and the activities that you would most like to do. Game drives, walks, boat cruises, canoeing, catch-and-release fishing and relaxing in camp are on the daily agenda, with your guides on hand to advise the best spots to see game, catch fish and take nature walks. The personable camp staff are ready and waiting to pour you a refreshing drink throughout the day, serve up a buffet of breakfast and lunch dishes and treat you to a candlelit dinner around the fire at night.
